Research / Education


  The following educational and research institutions of the Burgundy and Franche-Comté regions have a long history of collaborative projects, making the most of their pooled resources and their complementary fields of expertise.

University of Burgundy

  The University of Burgundy has today a roll of over 26,700 students, a staff of 2,600 – including 1,345 teacher-researchers, engineers and technicians – and 49 accredited research units.

  22 of these research units are grouped under the category of “Biology, Health, Nutrition” and “Sciences of Nature, Agronomy”. Several of these units (including a number of units jointly run with other research institutions) are linked to the IFR “Quality of Food and Sensoriality” (IFR 92) and the IFR Santé-STIC (IFR 100) along with CNRS, INRA and INSERM. 

  The University of Burgundy also includes a number of higher engineering schools (ENSBANA and IUVV) and the IUT Dijon.

Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Biologie Appliquée à la Nutrition et à l’Alimentation (ENSBANA)

  A nationally accredited institution, ENSBANA offers undergraduate and post-graduate engineering degree courses (Professional and Research Masters, and doctorate degree courses). ENSBANA has a teaching staff of 160 – of which 30 work in research – and a annual intake of 360 students.

  The research departments are structured around 4 areas:
 Laboratory of Microbiological and Food Process Engineering
 Research Team "Water - Active Molecules - Macromolecules - Activities" (EMMA)
 Laboratory "Physiology of Nutrition"
 Laboratory "Economy and Management"

Institut Universitaire de la Vigne et du Vin Jules GUYOT (IUVV) 
The institute has a permanant staff of 12 teacher-researchers, 6 engineers, assistant engineers or technicians, and an administrative staff of 3. The institute also runs its own vineyard of 2.4 ha in the Marsannay Village appelation zone, doubling as an viticulture and œnology experimental centre.

The institute has 3 main areas of activity: higher education, research and technology transfer.

 Higher education: 12 teacher-researchers pour 250 étudiants, with under- and post-graduate and continuing education courses in viticulture and oenology.
    Under-graduate/post-graduate: Licence specialising in "Sciences of the vine", Licence Pro in commerce and distribution of wine products, 2 Masters professionnels "Vines and rural areas" (M1 et M2) and "Fermentation procedures applied to the agro-food industry"  (M2), and Diplôme National d’Oenologue.
    Continuing education: Diplôme de Technicien en Œnologie, DU Sciences of the Vine, DU Wine and Culture and DU Practices of tasting through local knowledge. 

 Research: The teacher-researchers of the institute belong to various research teams working on the following themes: the natural defences of vines, microbiology, physio-chemistry and sensory analysis of wine.

 Technology transfer: since September 2007, the IUVV has set up a Cell in Oenological Scientific Expertise (Cellule d'Expertise Scientifique en Œnologie), CESEO whose role is to act as an interface between research teams and professionals of the wine-producing sector.

Cellule d'Expertise Scientifique En Oenologie (CESEO)

CESEO is a department of research and technology transfer attached to the University of Burgundy.

Supported by the research teams of the IFR 92, CESEO is housed in the the Institut Universitaire de la Vigne et du Vin "Jules Guyot" (IUVV ).

This cell has the aim of undertaking, coordinating and developping operations of applied research, analytical and consulting services in the areas of oenology.

Institut Universitaire de Technologie de Dijon (IUT Dijon)

  The IUT of Dijon is composed of 10 departments, two campuses (Dijon and Auxerre) and 1,700 students. It offers 2-year diploma courses (DUT), with the opportunity of an additional year in order to receive a DU (Diplôme Universitaire) or professional Bachelor (Licence Professionnelle) degree.
  Courses relating to food production or nutrition:
 DUT Biological Engineering, 2 options: Biological and Biochemical Analysis; Biological and Food Industries
 DU Tissue and Cell Culture and Molecular Biology
 DU Professions in Biomedical Diagnostics
 Licence Pro Production Management in Food Industries

University of Franche-Comté

The University of Franche-Comté is a multidisciplinary educational institution based on an ensemble of around 800 researchers and a support staff of 1,200.

The university’s research units are structured into 6 sectors corresponding to a group of scientific disciplines in which the research units pool their expertise in the pursuit of one or several cross-disciplinary research topics. The sectors of  “Life and Health Sciences” and “Life, Nature and Environment Sciences” include 14 research units, of which 3 are jointly run  with INRA, CNRS and INSERM.

Établissement National d’Enseignement Supérieur Agronomique de Dijon (ENESAD)

  Administered by the French Ministry for Agriculture and Fisheries, ENESAD carries out its activities of teaching degree courses, research and engineering in two principal areas:
 Sciences and techniques of agronomy and agro-food, rural economy and sociology
 Sciences and techniques of education and communication

  With a staff of 330, including more than 60 teacher-researchers, ENESAD offers post-graduate degree courses and maintains 13 research teams (including 3 teams jointly run with other institutions), covering 6 fields of education and research:
  Agronomy and the environment
  Animal production
  Engineering science
  Rural economy and sociology
  Sciences of Education
  Centre National d'Etudes et de Ressources en Technologies Avancées (CNERTA) – since the 1980s, CNERTA has carried out activities of computer engineering. Today, the centre groups together nearly 40 engineers, technicians, analysts, developpers, network and system administrators, and graphic artists. It concentrates its expertise on 5 key areas:
- Professional applications and iformation systems
- Internet technologies and website development
- Geographic Information Systems
- Exploitation of on-line tools on a national level: messaging and internet sites, data bases and management of student grants etc.
- Assistance for the usage of administrative management tools used by more than 450 estatblishments over the region

ENIL-ENILBIO-ISBA

Ecole Nationale d'Industrie Laitière et des Biotechnologies - Poligny
Ecole Nationale d'Industrie Laitière, des Analyses Biotechnologiques et de l'Eau - Besançon-Mamirolle
Institut des Sciences et des Biotechnologies de l'Agroalimentaire de Franche-Comté

ENIL (Besançon-Mamirolle) and ENILBIO (Poligny) are two higher education and research establishments run by a joint management under the direction of the French Ministry of Agriculture and the Franche-Comté regional council. The two establishments offer a complementary range of traning programs, from 1 to 5 years of training. They have the objective of training the future professionels of the agro-food and biotech industries.  

Around 600 students and trainees study on the two campuses, Besançon-Mamirolle and Poligny. Each year, around 300 professionals also follow continuing education training courses.

In order to integrate their development strategies and to better respond to the needs of higher education courses, ENIL and ENILBIO jointly launched the Institut des Sciences, des Biotechnologies et de l’Agroalimentaire (ISBA).

ISBA benefits from the resources of its two parent establishments for the teaching of Licence Professionnelle and Masters courses in the areas of dairy and agro-food, in partnership with University research programmes.

ISBA also undertakes activities in applied research and international relations.

  A nationally ranked business management school, ESC Dijon offers courses to more than 1,500 students. It also offers 5 specialised Master degrees (M/S) in collaboration with industry and other research and education establishments:

Institut Fédératif de Recherche "Quality of Food and Sensoriality" (IFR 92)

  In existence since 2000, the IFR 92 groups together 7 research units of INRA, ENESAD, CNRS and the University of Burgundy, all situated on Dijon’s extended university campus. These units carry out research on two general topics: “Quality of Food and Sensoriality” and "Process-Micorbiology". Enjoying pooled resources structured into 4 technical platforms, the IFR 92 defines research programmes in accordance with its scientific priorities, with the aim of creating a structure for Burgundy’s research activities into the sensory and food.

Institut Fédératif de Recherche "Santé-STIC" (Health – Sciences and Techniques of Information and Communication - IFR 100)

  In partnership with the University of Burgundy, INSERM, CNRS and CHU Dijon, the IFR "Santé-STIC" groups together all of the accredited research teams on the Dijon Campus working in the geneneral area of health. The IFR "Santé-STIC" currently runs around 15 research team working on 6 key scientific areas:
 Cell interactions and communications
 Activity markers of therapeutic agents
 Biological epidemiology
 Handicap, learning, treatment of information and rehabilitation
 Instrumentation, information systems and medical imaging
 Medical psychology, psychopathology

Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique (GIS) « AGRALE Dijon Campus »

AGRALE Dijon Campus – "Agriculture-Food-Environment" – is a knowledge cluster in the area of sciences and technologies of the living and the environment. It is one of 9 such knowledge clusters in France identified by the Ministry of Agriculture. It represents a grouping of all activites of education, research and technology transfer carried out by public and private establishments on the Dijon Campus (University of Burgundy, ENESAD, INRA, the CRITT 2ABI etc.) and, more broadly, in Burgundy and Franche-Comté (ISBA etc.).

AGRALE Dijon Campus aims to improve the coherence of the higher education activities in agronomy and vetinary science in Burgundy and Franche-Comté, as well as strengthening the relations between the various partners of education, research and economic development through-out the 'Grad-Est' quarter of France.

It represents roughly 1000 permanent staff and organises its activities around 3 key themes:

 "Quality of food and sensoriality" (IFR 92)
 "Bio-geo-sciences and agro-environment" (Institut Buffon)
 "Terriotry and development"


Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)

  The 18 research units of the CNRS in Burgundy (284 employees) and 8 CNRS units in Franche-Comté (202 employees) belong to the Grand-Est delegation of the CNRS. They carry out their activities notably in the following areas relating to agronomy and agro-food:
 Bio-geo-sciences
 Environment
 Biology
 Sciences of Taste
  
  The CNRS participates in several jointly run units, in particular with the University of Burgundy (the European Centre for the Sciences of Taste, the “Plants-Microbes-Environment” unit and the “Bio-geo-sciences” unit).

Institut National de Recherche Agronomique (INRA)

  The Dijon INRA Centre currently employs a staff of 420, including 200 researchers and engineers. It is made up of 12 units (includint 3 joint units) and has sites in 3 regions (Burgundy, Franche-Comté and Rhônes-Alpes).

  The activities of the Dijon INRA Centre are spread over 3 scientific areas, in close collaboration with the University of Burgundy, ENESAD and the CNRS, in particular through the IFR and jointly run research units.

  These 3 areas are:
 Quality of foodstuffs, sensory perception and consumer preferences
 Plants-Soil-Microbes-Environment
 Rural areas and development

Centre Régional d’Industrie et de Transfert de Technologie AgroAlimentaire et Bio-Industriel (CRITT 2ABI)

  The CRITT 2ABI is a department of the Burgundy Techologies Association. Its role is to facilitate the transfer of technology and applied research in assistance of industrial companies in the agro-food and bio-industrial sectors. The CRITT 2ABI has a staf of 17, includint 12 engineers and 3 technicians, and enjoys several partnerships with public and private research institutions.

  The CRITT 2ABI has two main fields of expertise:
 Agro-food / Bio-industrial
 The Dijon-Burgundy Biopôle Santé (platform for development and transfert of biomedical technologies)

  The missions of the CRITT 2ABI
 Interface with academic research laboratories and clinical services of hospitals and companies.
 Services: studies, coordination, training
 Innovation assistance: technology review, industrial property procedures, consulting, technology transfer.

Centre Régional d’Industrie et de Transfert de Technologie Agro-Environnement (CRITT AE)

The CRITT Agro-Environment, active since June 2007, is based on the Dijon INRA site and is supported by the Institut Buffon (INRA / ENESAD / CNRS / Université de Bourgogne).

With a staff of 6 engineers and technicians, it has at its disposal a Vitro-technology building of 500m², a laboratory of Microbiology and Environment and various partnerships on a regional and international level. 

The CRITT AE has the aim of fostering technological partnerships (research and development) and offers 3 main services:
-Technical services
- R&D contracts
- Scientific expertise and training sessions

The expertise of the CRITT AE covers the following fields:
- the multiplication and transformation of plant lines
- microbiology and the environment
-molecular markers of plants, microbes and the environment


Centre de recherche INSERM 866 "LIPIDS/NUTRITION/CANCER"

  The CRI 866 is a new structure replacing the INSERM school based in the Faculty of Medecine of the University of Dijon since 2002. In partnership with the CHU Dijon, the CRI 866 is directed by Eric Solary and is made up of 10 research teams belonging to following 4 departments:

 Cell death and cancer
 Epidemiology
 Lipids and Nutrition
 Fatty acids

Dijon University Hospital Centre (CHU)

  CHU Dijon runs several research programmes, alone or in conjunction with other health establishments, industry or scientific organisations (INSERM, University of Burgundy etc.). In 2005, CHU Dijon took part in 85 research projects.

  CHU also maintains a number of clinical and technological resource centres.
